Warner Bros. Discovery Abandons $8.5 Billion Movie Studio Plan in Las Vegas
Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has decided to scrap its ambitious $8.5 billion project to build a movie studio in Las Vegas. This decision comes after the backers of a film tax credit bill have shifted their focus to a smaller studio instead.
WBD’s $8.5 Billion Venture
Back in August 2024, WBD made headlines with its announcement to invest $8.5 billion in leasing and operating a movie studio in Nevada. However, this plan was contingent on the approval of a film tax credit incentive bill that had previously faced hurdles in becoming law.
SB 496, the proposed bill, was rejected in June 2023, failing to bring about economic diversity in Southern Nevada by allocating more resources to enhance the region’s workforce. As anticipated, the bill resurfaced recently as SB 220.
Known as the Nevada Film Infrastructure, Workforce Development, Education, and Economic Diversification Act, the new bill seeks to provide $100 million in annual transferable film tax credits for a duration of 15 years.
Despite WBD’s optimism about the potential in Nevada, the company has decided to abandon its original plans. As a result, the new bill now names Manhattan Beach Studios as the beneficiary of the proposed incentives.
Manhattan Beach Studios to Benefit
Senator Roberta Lange expressed her confidence in Manhattan Beach Studios’ commitment to expanding Nevada’s film industry. In an interview with Casino.org, Lange mentioned that Warner Bros. had opted to reevaluate its strategy before moving forward.
Warner Bros. had initially pledged to invest $900 million in building a studio and an additional $8.5 billion in production spending over 17 years. However, Bircher Development, the intended constructor of the studio, withdrew from the deal with WBD earlier this year.
Despite the setback, WBD remained determined to proceed with the studio’s construction, even if it meant engaging another developer. Currently, plans are in place for Bircher to collaborate with Manhattan Beach Studios to build the facility if SB 220 secures the necessary approval.
Sony’s Plans for Nevada
Aside from Warner Bros. and Manhattan Beach Studios, Sony is also eyeing the opportunities in Las Vegas’ movie industry. The entertainment giant is seeking tax credits to establish a $1.8 billion studio in Nevada, supported by the Clark County Zoning Commission and in partnership with Howard Hughes Corporation.
Under Assembly Bill 238, Sony could potentially receive up to $105 million in annual tax credits for a period of 15 years. In exchange, Sony has committed to investing a minimum of $400 million in the state’s film industry.
AB 238 also outlines that Sony must shoot at least half of every film at the Nevada studio and complete each project within a maximum timeframe of 18 months.
With multiple studios vying for a piece of the action in Las Vegas, the future of the city’s film industry seems poised for growth and development.
