Unibet Faces Challenges with Dutch Gambling Regulator
FDJ United’s popular Unibet brand, known as Optdeck in the Netherlands, has recently encountered issues with the country’s gambling regulator, the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA). The company received two official warnings for breaching strict Dutch regulations aimed at minimizing gambling harm.
Untargeted Ads on Buses
The initial warning was related to untargeted advertising, which has been prohibited in the Netherlands since 2023. Unibet’s logo, part of a partnership with the Unibet Tietema Rockets cycling team, was supposed to be exclusively displayed on the team’s bus for transporting the squad.
However, the branded bus was utilized for other purposes beyond the cycling team, contravening the agreement and advertising guidelines. In response, the KSA requested the cycling team to cease using the bus immediately. Modified stickers without the Unibet logo will be provided for the bus and team vehicles.
The KSA emphasized that sponsors are responsible for ensuring compliance with laws and regulations. The current bus configuration will be prohibited from the road starting on July 1, 2025, coinciding with the sports sponsorship ban.
Optdeck clarified that managing multiple sponsorship agreements can be intricate, and they were unaware of the bus being used for other transport activities.
The Autoplay Function Error
The second warning was issued due to Unibet’s BonusBuy feature including an autoplay function, enabling players to continue playing automatically after acquiring bonuses. This feature is strictly prohibited under Dutch law for online gambling targeting Dutch players.
Optdeck explained that a third-party inadvertently activated the autoplay function shortly after its launch. The feature was active for only two hours before being disabled. Players who incurred losses during that period were compensated, and measures are being implemented to prevent a recurrence.
The KSA acknowledged that both violations were promptly halted upon discovery and, for now, will only issue warnings. However, any future infringements could result in more severe penalties.
In the larger context, the Netherlands has been taking significant steps to minimize gambling harm. Since July 2023, untargeted gambling advertisements on various platforms have been prohibited, with only highly targeted ads meeting stringent criteria permitted.
Additionally, the KSA has implemented mandatory deposit limits and checks to ensure players can afford their gambling habits. These initiatives have led to a reduction in the number of individuals losing over €1,000 a month, from 4% to approximately 1.2%.
As the focus on player protection remains a top priority in Dutch gambling policy, Unibet and other operators must adhere to the regulations to operate within the country.
