ACMA Cracks Down on Seven Illegal Online Gambling Websites in Australia
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) recently announced that it has taken action against seven more illegal online gambling operators as part of its ongoing efforts to curb offshore gaming activities. The ACMA has referred these websites for ISP blocking to prevent them from targeting local players.
Illegal Online Gambling Websites Subject to ISP Blocking
In an official release, the ACMA revealed that the seven websites targeted for ISP blocking included Casiny, CoinPoker, Crown Play, Fafabet9, SlotFred, Smart 93, and Vigor Spin. Prior to this, Crown Slots and Billy Billion were also blocked for similar violations.
The ACMA emphasized that none of these operators were licensed to operate in Australia, highlighting the importance of website blocking as a measure to protect Australians from the risks associated with the black market.
Over 1,200 Websites Blocked
Since November 2019, the ACMA has blocked a total of 1,251 illegal gambling and affiliate websites. Additionally, 220 unauthorized services have exited the Australian market since the enforcement of new regulations on illegal online gambling began in 2017.
The ACMA urged Australian players to exercise caution when engaging with online gambling websites, as even legitimate-looking sites may not provide necessary player protections. Consumers were advised to visit the ACMA’s website for information on the legitimacy of gambling services.
ACMA Imposes Fine on Tabcorp for Spam Violations
Recently, the ACMA fined Tabcorp AUD 4 million ($2.6 million) for serious breaches of spam laws. The operator was found to have inundated VIP players with unsolicited messages without offering an option to unsubscribe. This marks the first instance of the ACMA uncovering spam violations in a gambling VIP program.
Earlier investigations by the ACMA revealed self-exclusion breaches by Buddybet, Ultrabet, VicBet, and Topbet. PointsBet was also penalized for violating spam and self-exclusion laws in the country.
